My copies of Zorro came from Amazon on friday. This is the series that came out in 1957-1960. Disney released the two seasons on dvd in their Disney Treasures series. There were 39 episodes in each season. There would have been a third season but ABC and Disney could not agree on rights to the series and it didn't get made. Disney produced 4 hour long shows for the Wonderful World of Disney. They would have been part of the third season. They put those episodes on the dvd's also. Each season comes packed in a tin box. It's part of the Disney Treasures format. Normally the tins are silver color but the two seasons of Zorro are in black tins. They are kind of nice. There are 6 dvds in the box, a booklet, a postcard of Don Diego in the season 1 box and a postcard of Zorro in the second box, a certificate with the number of the tin and a nice pin. The edition is limited to 30,000 sets. I ordered mine before they came out and they were only 39 bucks each. Now they are about 50 bucks a season. Disney had put the dvd's out before in their Disney Movie Club but they were colorized. These new editions are in the original black and white. I prefer that. You can buy a bootleg set out there for about the same as what I paid for both sets. Who knows what the quality of them could be?
I haven't seen them in many years. I was kind of excited. I watched a lot of them yesterday and more today. They looked pretty good and they are pretty much fun to watch. I can't remember any of the episodes that I've seen so far. The series is broken up into smaller story arcs during the season. The first one lasts 13 episodes and it concerns the corrupt Commandant stationed at Loc Angeles. Guy Williams is Zorro, or Don Diego de la Vega, as he is known during the day. He has just returned from three years in Spain. He's been at school and he's all learned up. He learns of the corruption going on and decides to hide behind his books and create an identity for working secretly. Thus Zorro is born. There's a lot packed in the 25 minute episodes. Sword fighting, horse riding, gun shooting, all the usual stuff you expect in a western. Someone occasionally gets killed in an episode but for the most part they are pretty low violence. There is a bit of humor in most episodes. I'm glad I have them andI figure that I will like the rest of the series.
I used to watch this serie as a kid, it was popular in France too. Very enjoyable, even if I also reminds that some stupid children compared me with the fat "Sergent Garcia", but nevermind lol Great to know that this is know available with a nice edition :)
