I hadn't seen My Science Project in years. I saw it in the theater when it was new in 1985. It's written and directed by Jonathan R Betuel. He wrote the script to the 1984 film The Last Starfighter. I think that's a better film than this one. This is his first time directing. He'd direct 3 TV episodes and then he wrote and directed the Whoopi Goldberg film Theodore Rex. I haven't seen TR, it looks awful from the trailer, and it scores a 2.4 on the IMDb. My Science Project is about a car nut that finds an alien engine and the weird things that happen when the thing gets some power. John Stockwell is a high school student, he finds the alien object, which he brings to the school to fool with. I think I liked this more when I was younger. Now the first half seems kind of slow and I wouldn't want to hang out with any of the characters that much. It picks up in the second half of the movie and the characters grow a little bit. I don't have a copy and I still don't think I need one. You can see it on YouTube and find out if you like it.
Space Probe Taurus is a 1965 space travel movie that sure doesn't live up to the tag line in the poster. "Horror so incredible..." I don't think so. There is a bit of the breaking point but not enough to get excited about. The whole movie isn't too exciting. It's written and directed by Leonard Katzman. It's Leonard's only feature film and one of the few things he wrote. Mostly he was a TV producer, he did direct a good bit of TV, including 66 episodes of Dallas. SPT is a low budget effort for AIP. It's about a crew of four that is sent to Taurus to see if human's could live there. The crew have some adventures in space and wind up in the middle of a body of water on a completely different planet. The crew are an odd bunch, an older scientist, a younger scientist, a woman scientist and a big burly guy who thinks he's god's gift to women. A lot of their dialog is pretty dumb. You can get a laugh where there wasn't one intended. Is that a bonus? I don't know. It's below average and that's all you can say about it. I have a soft spot for these old SF films and want to like them. Still, I wouldn't need to go buy this one. mind you I don't even know if there is a DVD and I'm too lazy to go check on Amazon. I downloaded it off of YouTube and that was good enough.
