Ninja is a 2009 US martial arts movie.Boaz Davidson wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Hurst. Michael's not the guy who, back in the 90s, played Iolaus on Hercules. The Wikipedia links Michael Hurst the New Zealand actor when you click on the link instead of the writer. Not sure if it's worth the bother to try to get that corrected. The IMDb has it right, Michael Hurst the writer wrote a few other minor horror and genre pictures. Nothing I can really recommend. I'd say the same thing for Ninja, it's pretty much the standard sort of martial arts story. The bad student does wrong, gets kicked out of the martial arts school, goes off and becomes evil, returns for the fancy weapon, there's lots of fighting. This one has the added bit of business in that it's set in China and New York. No matter, there are plenty of junior action buddies to chop to pieces, cops to kill and big action scenes with the main characters. It's sadly not much more than average. I gave it a 4 for being less than interesting, that and having a soundtrack that kind of pissed me off with it's level of intrusiveness.
Effects is a 1980 horror film filmed in Pittsburgh. It's written and directed by Dusty Nelson. Dusty's not much up to the task but he did get a film in the can. It stayed in the can for a long while. It was filmed in 1978, received it's world premiere in Pittsburgh in 1979, it's copyright 1980, it finally got released on DVD from Synapse in 2005. Tom Savini is the make up effects guy and he has a part in the film. It's about a film crew making a horror film. The director and some others are secretly making a snuff film. It's a dull sucker, nothing much happens for ages and when it does it's pretty shitty. The script, acting, production values, direction, it's all below average. It wouldn't have bothered me to see this disappear. Sadly, even if it would have been better made, it still would only be a mad man killing people. Can't give much of a shit about that.
