Threads 1984 Written by Barry Hines and directed by Mick Jackson. It's a British and Australian co-production. Barry wrote the novel A Kestrel For A Knave that got made into the film Kes by Ken Loach. Not a book or a film that I've been interested in but both the novel and the film are widely liked and respected. Kes failed in the US, withdrawn within days of opening. Roger Ebert wrote a 4 star review praising the film, he blames the Yorkshire accents for it being pulled. Suddenly, I'm interested. I love a good Yorkshire accent .
It's a post apocalypse story that ends really badly for Britain. The war starts in the Middle East and turns much of Europe into a wasteland with most of the population dead. We see most of story from the town of Sheffield. We meet several locals, some die and others aren't so lucky. By the end of the movie Britain has a tiny population who only have one working VCR to keep their children occupied while they starve to death.
The movie is totally bleak but well made for the time. The editing is the star here. The film cuts back and forth between the Sheffield locals and what's going on around the country and Europe. Information is dolled out in voice overs and title cards, images flash by in short snippets. The scenes with the locals are longer.
The movie gets an 8 on the IMDb and that's with 20,000 votes. Thirty percent are an 8, I can't disagree. I really enjoyed it despite not liking a bleak sort of story very much. Of course, the Post Apoc story is an exception. I would prefer a Mad Max sort of film than a bleak sort of drama about a couple of twenty somethings who've ruined their lives by taking the wrong drugs too often or a bleak family drama filled with anger and people staring into the distance.
There's a decent copy on YouTube, link above. The 1080p video looks pretty good. I thought it was worth a look and I think there are a few out there who might be interested. Others might like to avoid it if they don't care for bleak stories.
