Sperhauk was sick with something fluish so Joe and Greg came over here. Greg brought some PAL DVD's from England. He also brought his multi-region dvd player. We watched Witchfinder General. Vincent Price, who plays Matthew Hopkins, and some thugs travel through East Anglia with a witchfinding mandate from God and Country. Imagine being paid to torture and murder people. Nice, huh. Vincent and his crew run fowl of a Roundhead soldier. Vincent defiled his woman and now some killin' needs bein' done. I had seen this some time ago but remembered nothing at all. The British dvd has different versions of the film. We watched what we thought should be the most complete. I can't remember what it was called but who cares, huh. Total Film magazine called this the 15th best Horror film but I certainly can't put it that high up the list of good horror films. It gets a 6.9 on IMdB, and I can't even see the bottom of that level from where I am standing. It's just not that enjoyable. I had a EP copy under the US title The Conqueror Worm and had gotten rid of it years ago. The movie has nothing to do with Edgar Allan Poe but the distributor wanted to capitalize on the Price/Corman films of the time. It does remind me of those films. It's not a pleasant subject matter and the people are a pretty crappy bunch. Luckily, it was Greg who bought it.
I bought Tokyo Raiders and Joe picked it off the shelf. Greg hadn't seen it. It's ok but for me totally forgetable. Tony Leung and Ekin Cheng bounce around. They are joined by Kelly Chen and Cecilia Cheung. There's romance, mystery, punching, jumping, comedy, tragedy, spying, and lying all at the hands of director Jingle Ma. The story keeps unfolding, becoming more complex, and that's not helping. After a while I just quit carring. There are so many better action films.
