I'm really likin' the new Pirates sets that are just out. There were 8 sets. I got the three smaller ones. Left to right they cost 6, 10 and 20 bucks each. The pirates and soldiers are nice looking minifigs, which have printing on the front and the back of the torso. I don't care for the smirky face of that soldier. It's sort of annoying. Kind of makes me want to slap that goatee right off his face. Nice hat though.
Not too much difference in the first two pirates, other than the new green hat color, they even have the same face. The guy with no shirt has a nice three corner hat and a different face as does the guy on the end. There are lots of good parts. I like the new telescope and the new flame, which comes in opaque and transparent. The telescope comes in gold in the pirate sets. It looks like it will be in brown in the forthcoming Medieval Marketplace. That will be real handy. Going to be expensive on Bricklink I bet.
I'm not too sure that I like the new red and green parrot. Two colors are injectioned moulded and I don't think it looks that great. A bunch of parts have that two color process and often they don't look that good to me. There's a skull piece that is kind of cool looking and I really like the fish. There's a new color for the row boat. Dark blue. The octopus now comes in dark red. It looks pretty good. I just used one in a Micropolis module that I just finished over the weekend. You can see a picture of it here. That's the Flicker page of PBPancho or Matt as he is known to us humans from Earth. Loot Island has one of the golden chests and some dark brown 1x4 tiles. Those are nice, as are the nice selection of plants. Each of the three sets has a good variety of regular parts.
The $20 set has an unusual base piece that is used to create Loot Island. That's it below. I used a pair of them in the building that I used the red octopus on. Kind of weird lookin' isn't it. There are slots in the base that let the curved part fit over studs like many of the angled bricks do. The thing doesn't really have much clutch power. One of the two I have stayed in place but the other was warped enough that it would not. The piece is made of a soft plastic that can be warped very easily. I used technic pins with the axel on one end to hold it down. You have to put 2x2 plates with a technic pin coming down out of the bottom into the indentations with hole to have something to build on. There are no studs anywhere on the thing. Too soft I bet. An 8x8 plate will cover that large opening in the upper part of the island. It makes a nice little play space for the set. It could easily be used for some limited landscaping. Good sets all around. I will like to have multiples of those.
