Harry returns to the skies in the new Harry Potter LEGO set. Not quite a full team but you can still have some heavy broom action with 4 players and Madame Hooch as referee. At 153 parts for $19.99 (USA) it seems pretty skimpy, but there are 5 minifigs, and a few of the parts are interesting. There were two previous Quidditch sets, both from 2002.
4726 Quidditch Practice is similar, there's a judging tower, ball launcher, and trunk full of balls. There are some nice printed pieces included, like the Gryffindor and Slytherin crests printed on a 1x2 brick, which get used to make the front panel in the judges stand. Behind that
panel is the other nice printed part, a blue Quidditch book. There are only three figures in the set, Harry, Draco and Madame Hooch. That combination always made me wonder why Harry would be out alone with Draco in a practice. Beyond me. Set 4711 Flying Lesson again had Harry and Draco together, on brooms, in a lesson. Again with the re-imagining, those two wouldn't be flying together unless they are in a match. Finally, 8 years later, LEGO returns to the Quidditch Pitch and gets it right, creating a set that has a good reason to have both Gryffindors and Slytherins players in a set and a good reason to buy multiple copies of that set. You'll need 4 of 'em to make a full team. The new set has two additional players, Gryffindor Oliver Wood, and Slytherin Marcus Flint. Wood left Hogwarts after Harry's fourth year and Draco joined the Slytherin team in Harry's second year.
That's new figures up on the top row and the 2002 versions below. There's a group of LEGO fans that don't care for the flesh colored minifigures but that group wouldn't include me. I like the new colors that heads come in. The more the better, that's what I say. I think the figures look pretty good and I like the new qudditch uniforms a lot. The darker green of the Slytherin sweater is much nicer than the regular green of the 2002 figure. Madame Hooch has a much nicer costume. I like the way they drew the new torso. I kind of like the cape with the stripes in the 2002 minfigure.
Harry, Draco, Madame Hooch, Oliver and Marcus. Draco looks like he's bummed out, probably just got his ass handed to him by Harry Potter. Madame Hooch's goggleless face looks kind of creepy. Could get some use out of that in the right hands. Harry has the same hair. Draco has a new hair piece that is also available in dark brown on Fenrir Greyback in The Burrow set. Here's Oliver Wood and Marcus Flint and the box they came in.
There's a few good bits and pieces in there but nothing too much special. The soft golden axles used for the hoops might come in handy some time. There's some green plates, a silver cup, 5 brooms, 4 dark red cones, a fair bit of reddish brown and a bit of tan. There are 53 unique parts, not including the minifigs, in a set of 153 pieces, so there's lots of ones and twos of many parts. Since I'm not planning to build a team I think I'll only pick up one or two of these. Let someone else build a nice big Quidditch Pitch.
Very informative review of the Quidditch set. I like the flesh-colored minifig heads, too.
