I really enjoy watching Demolition Man. Maybe it's all the goofy jokes and dialogs. Maybe it's all the swearing and the silly costumes. The script is by Daniel Waters who first wrote Heathers and followed that with The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Hudson Hawk and Batman Returns. I actually like most of those movies but know they are all movies that people seem to love or hate. Heathers is entertaining fun but a bit dark and murderous. The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is really the only thing that I like Andrew Dice Clay in and Hudson Hawk is lighthearted fun with Bruce Willis. Like Batman Returns all the movies are flawed but that's not necessarily anything to do with the writer. Lots of other people get their mitts on those scripts and help make the movie. Waters would only get a couple more of his scripts made into movies and he directed them himself. I haven't seen either Happy Campers or Sex and Death 101. Here's a bit from the Wikipedia about the possible plagiarism of a Hungarian Novel. I hadn't heard of this until today.
Hungarian science fiction writer Istvan Nemere claims that most of Demolition Man is based on his novel Holtak harca (Fight of the Dead), published in 1986. In the novel, a terrorist and his enemy, a counter-terrorism soldier are cryogenically frozen and awakened in the 22nd century, when violence was purged from society. A copyright investigation proved that 75% of the film is identical to the book. However, Nemere chose not to initiate a lawsuit, as it would have been too expensive for him to hire a lawyer and fight against major Hollywood forces in the United States. The author claims that Hollywood had ripped-off works of many Eastern European writers after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and that he knows the person he claims to be responsible for illegally selling his idea to the filmmakers.
Not sure if that's true but I could see it without any problem at all. There were a couple of other writers associated to the project. Still doesn't change anything in what's up on screen, it's pretty entertaining. Stallone and Snipes are cop and criminal in the near future when the movie opens. It's a 1993 movie that is set in 1996. Those three years were pretty rough on Los Angeles, the city has turned into a war zone and the cops battle the criminals on the constantly burning streets. I blame the consumer society, we generate so much fuel. The guys have a final confrontation, with lots of collateral damage to the surrounding area. Thinking Stallone was responsible for the death of the Snipes' hostages both of them get frozen in the cryoprison. In 2032 Wesley gets thawed out for a parole hering and he escapes. Someone has secretly programmed access codes and knowledge of the future in his head. That doesn't happen to Stallone who wakens without the knowledge of the three sea shells. The chase is on and there's lots of collateral damage and death murder kill. The whimpy non-violent society isn't much fun but that's soon corrected as Dennis Leary leads a revolt of physically fornicating meat eating rebels. There's lots of fun dialog while they are blasting each other. Sandra Bullock plays a cop with a knowledge and fascination of the past. She gets it wrong a lot. Some of the antics of our future brethern are dumb but that's people for you. They come in such stupid varieties you just have to laugh.
I didn't laugh at much of Destination Mars, even though they were trying to make me laugh. It's a 2002 made for video movie that is a parody of the science fiction movies of the 1950's. It's supposed to be a lost movie that's been recently recovered and restored. There's a 12 minute documentary that plays before the movie. It fills us in on the story of the film makers and what happened to get the film confiscated by the government. There's aliens invading and some earthmen have to stop the invasion. The Martian women dress in sort of Egyptian trappings and they have funny gestures. It's just not that funny, it's just a copy of that type of low-budget movie it's trying to parody and since those movies weren't comedies it just doesn't work so well with the script they have. They people who did the recent parody Alien Tresspass did a better job. Go watch that.
