Season 3 has the regulars James Roday, Dule Hill, Timothy Omundson, Maggie Lawson, Corbin Bernsen and Kristen Nelson all returning for 16 more episodes of goofy crime solving fun in sunny Santa Barbara. It's such a contrast from watching the first few episodes of Grimm. In that show even the sunny shots are dark. In Psych the days are sunny and the nights are bright. It's mostly a comedy with murder and jokes. Series creator Steve Franks continues as show runner, writes three episodes, and directs another. James Roday joins the ranks of interesting directors that show up on the set, directors like John Landis, John Badham, Tim Matheson, Steve Miner, Martha Coolidge and Jay Chandrasekhar. This season has a nice bunch of guest stars show up. Here's a few of the many. Cybill Shepherd appears in the first episode as James's mother. He's got issues with her leaving them when he was young and things take a while to work out the truth. I'm not much of a Cybill fan but I do tollerate her in Moonlighting for the most part. Corbin thinks he might get a shot with Cybill but that doesn't work out. It's for the best. Rachel Leigh Cook shows up from James and Dule's high school days and she and James rekindle an old relationship. Steve Weber shows up as James uncle. He's got a treasure map and that's fun until people with guns show up. Jane Lynch appears as the police chief's sister. She's great as the tough abrasive coast guard captain who has a big rivalry with her sister. Tim takes a shine to her and they date briefly.
The style continues to be colorful and fun. I find it a welcome change from the seriousness of most CSI type crime shows. I just don't watch them but generally I do like comedy. Life is serious enough as it is who needs to be reminded of it in your popular media. Gimmie some escapism, yes sir. Psych does gets a bit dark in the last episode of the season when Cybill gets strapped to a bomb by a serial killer. The villian is played by Ally Sheedy whom I did not recognize. Don't worry, James will save her. I'm still having fun watching these shows and I still like the characters. James is still the kind of guy I enjoy on tv. You know, as opposed to real life. Most of the other characters are fun to watch and all the actors do a great job. I'm thinking these are shows that I will want to revisit again. There's a 4th season on my shelf and I'll get to those sooner than some of the things I have waiting.
