The Naughtiest Girl Again by Enid Blyton is the 2nd of the series of four boooks. It was first published in 1942. It's a story about a girl named Elizabeth who goes to a progressive co-ed school where they share their pocket money and have a powerful school council. In the first book she was a brat and that was worked out. There are some new kids that show up for the new term and they have their troubles but they get all worked out.You can see the kids playing lacrosse in their school uniforms. It's a fun quick read but not something I might read other than for the writer.
Operation Red Jerico & Operation Typhoon Shore by Joshua Mowll are the first two of a series of three that started in 2005. I found them remaindered at Half Price Books and liked the look of the books so much I put the first one at the top of the next book to read pile. It's a fluid thing, that pile, and the book on top isn't always the next one digested. Some sad books have been on top again and again, patiently waiting their turn. The author is a graphic artist who's written a trilogy of books set in the 1920's and illustrated the adventure with pictures, drawings and artifacts from the story. His graphic work is really nice, there are plenty of interesting images, foldouts, vehicle cutaways, maps, illustrated character biographies, and bits of history about the society and it's place in history. They really bring the book to life. I like illustrated books and this is a really nice one. Two kids are sent off to spend some time with their Uncle who has his own ship. Their parents are missing in Asia while off on a secret mission. As they spend some time on the ship they learn more about The Guild Of Specialists. It's a secret organization that keeps an eye on some ancient artifacts and knowledge. The kids get involved with pirates, saboteurs, Russians, subs, airplanes, strange science and dangerous artifacts. It's a good pager turner of an adventure series. There's a nice bit of humour and a plenty of dangerous goings on. People gets killed occasionally. I liked the first book so much that I started the second right away. They took most of the month to read but I wasn't reading much that month for some reason. I usually try to read at lunch time but sometimes I spend it running errands. I'd recommend them for those that like the YA adventure story. I actually went and ordered the thrid book from Amazon because I wanted to finish the trilogy and not wait until I found the third one used. Might be a while.
So those three books were the last of the 79 books I read for 2011. Not a great total, down from last year. Try to do better in 2012. I need to read some thinner books. I've been sloggin' through a bunch of Robert E Howard horror stories for bed time reading and that's taking some doing. Puts me to sleep though. More on that later.
