False Pretenses is a 1935 film with Irene Ware and Sidney Blackmer. She's a waitress who lost her job and he's a millionaire who lost his dough. They meet under false assumptions and come up with a plan to get Irene married off to a rich guy. There's some good amount of comedy and high society hijinks with a twist or two. A good average film that was fun to watch.
The Gang's All Here is a 1941 film with Frankie Darro and Mantan Moreland. Everyone calls them kids but Frankie is 24 and Mantan is 39. They are looking for work and hire on as truck drivers. The trucking company is having it's trucks wrecked and the drivers are getting hurt then murdered as the violence escalates. Frankie heads a movement to save the trucking company from the dishonest insurance man and his minions. There's a lot of truck driving and some amount of comedy. I usually like seeing Mantan in his movies and here he plays off of Laurence Criner who some of you might have seen if you watched Freckles Comes Home. He's the other black guy in the movie.
The Inspector General is a 1949 Danny Kaye film that I'm just not that interested in. Danny was never one of my faves as an actor or singer. I can't remember having any of his other films in my collection. Here's he's a gypsy and it's the early part of the 19th century. He get's mistaken for the Inspector General who is supposed to be in the area in a disguise. He's wined and dined by the town's corrupt officials. They plot ot murder him but that plan goes up in smoke. There's some romance and a lot of singing. Walter Sleazak, Alna Hale Sr, and Elsa Lanchester appear. It's mostly a good film but I'm just not that into Danny.
The Kid is a 1921 silent film with Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan. Jackie was Uncle Fester in The Addams Family. He started in the business in 1917 when he was 3 years old and worked until he died at age 70 in 1984. Chaplin finds a kid and they bond. It's suipposed to be 6 reels of joy according to the poster. There's a lot of melodrama and I have to be in the mood for that sort of thing.
