I picked up one of the two smallest of the new Monster Fighters sets. It's got 90 pieces, including those two minifigs, for $11.99. That's just over 13 cents a part. Luckily some of them are good and some are double plus good. What I build and what parts I like are the determining factor in a set's likability. I treat minifigs as
parts. I'll customize the figures to fit what I'm building. Sometimes the fig is perfect as it comes but you can't always use them as is. Mostly I change hands, legs, hair, heads and hats. Occasionally arms. I like certain colors more than others and I'll pick up sets that are heavy in those colors. Greys & blays, brown & reddish brown, tan & dark tan, green & sandgreen and dark red are all near the top. Monster Fighters and Lord Of The Rings have a lot of those colors. There seems to be more black parts in the MF sets and even though I don't favor that color I seem to wind up using it a fair bit. There are a few of those black parts that look like they'll be comin' to my house. I'll be blogging those sets later.
The set has a lady monster fighter called Ann Lee. She's got a scar on her face and a harpoon in her hair. That hair was first used on the Series 5 Collectible Minifigs Cavewoman. The cavewoman had a short white bone in her hair. You don't need to put a bone or a harpoon in her hair, it looks fine as it is. She's got a nice costume and a small one woman helicopter. She's a modern monster fighter and
she's flyin' after that mummy in his one mummy chariot. That chariot has a glow in the dark skeleton horse. The mummy glows too, or at least the printing on him glows. After some tests I found that the mummy doesn't glow nearly as well as the skeleton horse. I already have a few of the skeleton horse from the Fantasy Castle series but they don't glow in the dark. It also came in black in the Harry Potter series. Stick some black wings on it and you've got a thestral.
That's the themes chase part to the left. It's the moonstone which while it looks blue is trans-purple in the set. The image on it is the Eye of Horus. I'm of mixed feelings about these sorts of parts. Sometimes they are cool looking but they don't
always serve multiple uses. The Atlantis discs were that way with their colored discs. A lot of extra work goes into these and it means the price of the set goes up to pay for that work. Maybe the set would have had 95 pieces if they didn't make those moonstones. I'm only guessing but there is a cost. The chariot is kind of oddly built and it's a hodgepodge of colors. I counted 11 different ones. There are 4 dark tan macaroni bricks that are good to have. It would be better to have a bunch more than four but that almost goes without saying. There's a dozen pieces in pearl gold and 5 flat silver 1x1 round plates. T
he crossbow and the harpoons are the same flat silver. I like that color. I'm always for variety and there's a good variety of pieces, a few tan pieces, some dark red, some dark blay and an assortment of pieces that have bars or clips on them. The wheels might come in handy if I didn't already have some that I haven't gotten a use for yet. I so rarely build carts with wheels. I'll take the set apart in a few days and put the parts in their proper places until I need them.
