I had forgotten to finally post about the last Star Trek disc of season 3. This is mostly for me as a reminder of what's on the set. They really pack a lot of bits and pieces on this disc. There are two versions of The Cage, the original pilot with Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike, parts of which were cut up and used in the first season episode The Menagerie. About 11 minutes of The Cage weren't used in The Menagerie. The Cage was never broadcast on tv until 1988. It was put out on VHS in 1986 and that tape had a Gene Roddenberry introduction. Parts of it are in color and some parts are in black and white. In 1988 a full color version aired on tv with an intro by Patrick Stuart. They include both of those versions on the dvd. Gene's intro is there but not the Patrick intro.
The pilot is 63 minutes log and Paramount didn't care for it very much. They requested a second pilot and got Where No Man Has Gone Before. I thought The Cage was pretty entertaining. It's nice to see it. The rest of the disk is packed with a bunch of short featurettes. Bill Blackbeard's Treasure Chest Pt 3 concludes Bill talking about the home movies he made while on the set of the series. They are pretty fun to watch. To Boldly Go Season 3 has a bunch of interviews with cast and crew. A Star Trek Collectors Dream Come True is a short piece on collecting phasers with some guy I never heard of before. Life Beyond Trek has a short interview with Walter Koenig. Chief Engineers Log is the same thing with James Doohan. Memoir From Mr Sulu gives George Takei a chance to chat about his time on the show. Star Trek's Impact has a short interview with Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry talking about the show. Captain's Log is a piece with producer Robert H Justman. All were entertaining but I have a tendency to like those kind of things.
