I got the dvd set for the 4th and last season of the Canadian SF show Sanctuary from the library and watched it over the last few days. It's was a nice wrap up of the series. It aired on the Syfy channel in November 2010 and there were 13 episodes. Here's 1-5 & 7-13 on YouTube. Here's episode 6.
Our main cast is all back. Amanda Tapping is Helen Magnus, Robin Dunne is Will Zimmerman, Ryan Robbins is Henry Foss, Christopher Heyerdahl is Bigfoot & John Druitt. As the season opens Helen chases the bad guy from the last season into the past. Once there she discovers she's trapped. Since she's immortal she creates a secret identity and lives a second time through the 20th century. When I watched that I wondered if she ever ran into Bender. Helen, knowing everything, amasses a huge fortune and she uses this to save the abnormals at the end of the season.
While Helen's MIA, Will gets to run the Sanctuary network. His first big problem is the abnormals who are pouring out of their old hiding place. The UN takes over the refugee camp and things don't go so well. There's some fighting and dying. There are people with different agendas on the show and some of them aren't too nice. Helen turns up in the second episode, everyone think she's only been gone for a short time but she's been gone for over 100 years. Then everyone has to fight a basilisk without the aid of a Phoenix. Henry's werewolf girlfriend returns to let him know she's knocked up. Henry's happy, and sad, things are hectic at the Sanctuary. Their normal level of trouble seems to be ramping up.
Magnus goes head to head with the UN and they pull her funds. Remember, she had some cash hidden away, using that she continues on with her plan. There's lots of action and globe trotting as all the events play out over the season. For a show shot in Canada, they really do a good job of making you feel you're jumping from place to place. Toronto, being such a cosmopolitian city, gives the production a nice pick of good actors of every nationality and gender. Some of the fake locations and the CGI support isn't always perfect but they do put in a fair bit of effort. The show moves along at a nice clip and the characters are mostly likeable. There's a fair bit of humor and good mix of plot and character development. I was sort of sad to leave the show, there won't be anymore, but it ended on a nice note and wrapped up the main thread of the story. I'd recommend it to the sf tv watching type. It's not Babylon 5 but what is.
