I got the 2 disc dvd set of the 1st series of Little Britain from the library and sure laughed my ass off. It's a sketch comedy show that reminds me of Monty Python but with more cock. I was happily surprised that the series was something that tickled my funny bone. I had seen the two guys behind the production, David Walliams and Matt Lucas, on various British tv talk shows during the last year and thought they pretty funny at times. That's not necessarily going to mean I'll like their show. The two of them started working together years ago. The Little Britain radio show had 9 episodes, the pilot aired in 2000, they did 4 more in 2001 and the last 4 in 2002. There was a pilot for the tv series which first aired February 9 2003. September that year saw the broadcast of the first series on BBC 3. After proving popular the 8 episodes were repeated on BBC 2.
The guys play all sorts of odd characters, some of whom are ladies, in their lady things. Left to right on the dvd cover we have Daffyd Thomas, Lou and Andy, and Emily Howard. Daffyd is the only gay in the village of Llanddewi Brefi. So he thinks. Little does he know there's a lot of pole vaulting and carpet munching going on by the locals. He doesn't want to know it when they tell him about all the gay goings on. Lou is Andy's caregiver. Andy is a royal pain in the ass. Emily is one of the worst transvestites in England but she enjoys doing lady things. They are joined by a group of regulars and the odd guest. Ruth Jones plays Myfanwy, the bar tender in the pub that Daffyd frequents. She's a lesbian. Anthony Stewart Head appears in most episodes as the British Prime Minister. He even toured on their live shows. David Walliams plays his assistant, who's totally a big gay bitch and completely enamoured with the PM. Did I mention that Tom Baker narrates the show. I know he'd want me to tell you what a great job he does.
There's plenty of jokes but they might not appeal to everyone. There's some amount of nudity, mostly of the man ass variety. Even though a few of the sketches aren't favorites I'm still laughing about the ones I did like a couple of days later. I'd recommend it to those whose humor leans toward The Young Ones and not toward Are You Being Served.
