The Face Of Evil was the first serial with the Doctor's new companion Leela. It's the 4th serial of the 14th season and it first aired January 1 to 27 1977. Tom Baker is the Doctor and Louise Jameson is Leela. Pennant Roberts is the director and Chris Boucher is the writer.
The Doctor lands on a jungle planet and encounters Leela. She'd just been kicked out of her tribe for speaking out against their god. The tribe is rather primitive with harsh punishments. Their leader is swayed by the head priest of their god. The priest is in communication with their god who is being held captive by the Tesh behind a black and impenetrable barrier.
The Doc get caught after snooping around the area and the village. He had seen the huge face, his face, carved into the side of a mountain. He must have been there but he can't remember. The Wikipedia says: The novelisation of this story suggests that the Doctor's first visit to the planet of the Sevateem takes place during Robot; early in that serial, Sarah Jane Smith witnesses the newly regenerated and still delirious Doctor starting to leave in the TARDIS. However, the Doctor returns so quickly, with his mind so addled as a result of his recent regeneration that he never consciously remembered his time away until his return. Makes as good a guess as any, huh. No matter, that big face is the way to the area behind the black barrier.
The Doctor had figured out that the people on the planet were the members of a survey team that had been stranded. Some live in the jungle and some live in the spaceship behind the barrier. The Doctor and Leela find the way through the barrier in the giant Doctor head. Over the teeth and down the gullet leads to the Tesh. There's some fighting and people get killed. Leela does a lot of that herself. The Doc and Leela get caught but the Doc blows up the death ray. He also kicks a guy to his death. He did warn him. The Doc contronts the computer that is causing all the trouble and gets that sorted out. As he's leaving Leela jumps into the Tardis and they are off.
The audio commentaries were ok but lacking Tom Baker. Moderator Toby Hadoke is joined by Louise Jameson, Leslie Schofield, David Garfield, Mike Ellis, Harry H Fielder, Philip Hinchcliffe and John McGlashan. Into the Wild is a making of and it's got several of the people on the commentaries. There's a good segment on Leela's arrival. From the Cutting Room Floor is a bunch of deleted scenes and outtakes.
