The second series of DCI Banks has three more stories spread over 6 episodes. They started airing October 10 2012. Stephen Tompkinson is DCI Banks, Andrea Lowe is DS Annie Cabbot and Caroline Catz is DI Helen Morton. Banks heads the Major Crimes unit, Cabbot is on the team but she's about to take a maternity leave for the series and she's only in the first story. Lowe was actually pregnant in her real life. Morton comes in as Cabbot's replacement. I was curious about Catz, she's Louisa in Doc Martin, and this is the only other thing I'd seen her in. She's a bit of an odd one, kind of uptight and stand offish. Her first day on the job and she's got to treat Banks as a suspect in the death of a woman. Just to ramp it up a bit, Bank's brother is involved with something that gets him killed. It all turns out to be the same thing, a creep who'd kill a baby to save his dying daughter. In the second story an accountant is killed and that leads them to the accountant's second life which has links to money laundering and politics. In the last story the teams arrests a theater director for the murder of a young woman. He gets off on a technicality and days later the best friend of the dead girl is murdered. They find the director's hair under her fingernails. Trouble is one of Bank's team had been watching him at the time and he didn't do it. Now they're looking for the real killer. He's a real shit. Too bad about that director, his life is pretty fucked up. Makes you want to avoid people sometimes, huh. The story tone is like the first series, it's a Drama with a capital D and there's plenty of tension, anger and yelling. They're well done stories and I liked them well enough to watch them but if I never see them again I won't be too upset or anything. Better to see something I like more or some new program.
