About a month ago a whole bunch of movies appeared on the Internet Archive for a brief period. They were movies that shouldn't have been there so it was no surprise when they disappeared. I downloaded several before that happened and Sea Devils was one of them. It's a 1953 film written by Borden Chase and directed by Raoul Walsh. It's based on Victor Hugo's novel Toilers of the Sea. It stars Rock Hudson and Yvonne De Carlo. He's a smuggler and she's a spy. It's 1800 and Britain and France have been at war for a couple of years. Fishing is dangerous and people have turned to smuggling. Yvonne is a British spy who impersonates a French Countess. She's in France to get info on the French fleet. Things go poorly and she's found out and locked up. Rock and his pals go after her. Yvonne escapes her prison, set up by the French Captain, and everyone nearly gets caught. Don't worry, they'll get away. There's plenty of sailing, some fights, a bit of romance and a few jokes. It's not great but it's ok to watch. It doesn't seem to be out on DVD here in the US. It might be available streaming. I'm still avoiding signing up for a streaming service. I'd get sucked into that and never get time to look at the DVDs I have again.
