I finished the 8th series of Dad's Army the other day but haven't had time to blog anything. Like the last bunch of episodes these ones were entertaining and made me laugh. I know what the characters are, the way they act, things they might say. Like the previous series, this one has 6 episodes, and they were first broadcast in September and October 1975. As I might have said in a past post about this series, I don't remember seeing any DA on Canadian TV back when it was broadcast. There were a good number of British shows carried on the CBC and CTV networks and we watched a lot of them. I'm seeing some, like The Sweeney, again for the first time in decades, some, like Monty Python's Flying Circus or The Saint, I've been watching through the years, and others, like Dad's Army, I'm seeing for the very first time. Least as far as I know.
The plots on Dads Army are all pretty simple. Silly situations, funny dialog, and a dose of slapstick are the core of the show. The platoon have to play the Nazi's in a training film in the first episode. Mainwaring and some of the platoon don't care much for that and the locals get scared. Private Pike gets his call up papers in the second episode and his mom is bummed he's A-1. Don't worry he'll be ok. Poor private Godfrey's cottage is scheduled to be torn down for a new airfield. Luckily he's got Captain Mainwaring and the platoon on his side so they can figure out who to save his house. He's such a sweet character, you don't want anything bad to happen to him. He lives in the house with is two sisters, it's all rather a dotterfest, but sweet. The platoon is on maneuvers when they encounter a real Nazi air crew. Banker Mainwaring's issues with Butcher Jones' bank account takes up a good bit of the 5th episode and the last one has Jones being mistaken for an escaped German POW.
I'll be getting to the last series in a bit, then I can put those DVD's away.
