The post brought a DVD from England today. I right excited and popped it into the DVD player straight away. It's an 8 part serial called Five On A Treasure Island. It's based on Enid Blyton's 1942 novel of the same name and thanks to BFI I've got a really nice looking copy of the 1957 CFF adaptation to watch.
The Famous Five are 4 kids, named George, Julian, Dick and Anne, plus a dog named Timmy. They had a series of 21 adventures in book form. I've read most of them but can't say which ones I still need. Get distracted by other books coming and going and i move on. Might be a good idea to make a list and see what I need. I plan to re-read the lot again someday.
Due to a happy bit of luck the kids find a clue to a treasure on Kirrin Island. Lucky for George, her Uncle owns the island. Some baddies find a clue to the treasure and try to buy the island. When that fails they try to steal the loot. The kids fight back and nearly catch them. Don't worry the baddies won't get away. The Famous Five aren't my favorite of Enid's characters, that would be the Adventure series.
The island and the castle were filmed in Dorset at Corfe Castle in Corfe Castle Village, the Jurassic Coast, Lulworth Cove and Stair Hole near Lulworth Cove which served as the Kirrin Island landing spot for the rowing boat in the movie. The antique store from the beginning of the movie was filmed at Oliver's in 5 West Street, Corfe Castle Village, Dorset, UK.
The production is fine and the new transfer looks pretty darn good. The DVD has a booklet with a nice essay on the production. I find there's a second serial which is now on order. I'll be glad to watch these over again someday. Here's a color shot of Corfe Castle.
