I hadn't seen 1984 in years. I was thinking about it the other day and since I didn't have a copy I looked on Netflix and the library but they didn't have it. I could buy a DVD on Amazon for 15 bucks but that seemed like a waste of money for a movie I might only watch the one time. It's not much of a happy story and those are less likely to get re-watched. I might have let that desire to watch the movie pass but I found a copy on YouTube. It's not the greatest but you can see what's going on and that's good enough for this movie.
Edmond O'Brien, playing Winston Smith, and Jan Sterling start an illegal romance in the totalitarian world they live in. They also join a secret underground movement to overthrow the government. It doesn't go so well for them.
I knew there was a 1984 adaptation of the George Orwell book, with John Hurt as Winston Smith, I had gone to the theater to see it. I didn't care that much for it and haven't seen it since.
I don't remember hearing about the 1954 BBC production of 1984 before but luckily for me YouTube has a copy. Watch it here. It's got Peter Cushing plays Winston Smith. Donald Pleasence plays his co-worker Syme. Donald would also appear in the 1956 film as a combination of Syme and Parsons. It's a fairly good adaptation and the copy looks fair. It's kind of washed out but you can see it just fine. Now I've probably seen enough of 1984 for a while.
