I hadn't heard of Bargain Hunt before. I found it on YouTube. It's been on since the turn of the century and they've done over 1200 episodes. It's a version of the antique show. The format is to give a couple of teams £200 and an hour to buy 3 items at a antique show. The host, Tim Wonnacott, introduces the teams and they have a bit of a chat. Then it's a bit of time looking over the wares at the show. After they spend their money the items are entered into an auction the following week. The teams get to keep the profit but they don't seem to be monetarily punished for a loss.
The 2003 show linked to in the title above has 2 pair of university students. One team broke even and the second team lost £73. They get an expert to guide them. The losing team got a right wanker who got them to buy a piece of pottery that turned out to be restored. He should have caught that. Tim takes a look at a couple of local buildings. That was fairly interesting.
In a second random episode the show is in Edinburgh and they are at a huge show in a big auditorium. It's kind of fun seeing some of the stuff that they look at. Tim takes a look at the Burrell Museum. One of the things Burrell collected was Church stained glass from the late 1400's and early 1500s.
I enjoyed the episodes I saw but like most antiques shows I get bored with them really quick. Most of the items that they are looking at aren't that interesting to me. I know from reading the Jonathan Gash Lovejoy novels I wouldn't really know enough about antiques that I couldn't be sure of getting cheated.
