I got the first season of Canadian comedy drama Republic Of Doyle from the library. The first season aired back in 2010 and the series lasted 6 seasons before being cancelled. Acorn Media has the first two seasons out here in the US but the whole series is out on DVD in Canada. The complete set is only about $75 Canadian on Amazon Canada. That set is much more expensive on Amazon US. The show was co-created by actor Allan Howco, he plays the lead character Jake Doyle, he's also a producer and he writes, or co-writes, some of the scripts.
That's Allan in the grey suit. Jake's a partner in Doyle & Doyle with his father Malachy Doyle. Seán McGinley plays Malachy. The red haired woman is Rose Doyle, played by Lynda Boyd. The woman in the green dress is Marthe Bernard who plays Malachy's grand daughter Katrina "Tinny" Doyle. She lives in the same house as Malachy, Rose and Jake. The woman in the white top is Krystin Pellerin, she plays Constable Leslie Bennett. She becomes one of Jake's romantic interests in the season. The other fellow in the back is Mark O'Brien, playing Desmond "Des" Courtney, he's a graffiti artist who comes to work for Doyle & Doyle. He has an interest in Tinny and Jake doesn't like him for it.
The Doyle's have a lot of family drama and some of that made me laugh. I thought the show was very much like the 70's kind of PI shows that used to be so popular, like The Rockford Files. Sure enough, there's mention of TRF in the making of featurette. That was Allan's desire when creating the show. They manage to do a great job making that sort of show.
The show is filmed in St John's Newfoundland and it's a pretty place. The streets are all uppy and downy and the houses and buildings are colorful. The stories have some laughs, some punch ups, some running about and plenty of yelling. The plots have a nice variety of subjects. I was happy to watch the season and I have picked up the second season from the library today. I liked it enough to look up the DVDs on Amazon Canada to see what else was available.
