Nine books for the month of June 2016. Not too bad.
Doctor Syn On The High Seas by Russell Thorndike is the second Dr Syn book and it's set at the beginning of Dr Syn's story. The first book takes place at the end of Syn's life. Here he's in love with a woman whom he marries. She gets seduced by another man and they go on the run. Syn follows and chases them all over the world. He turns into a pirate, called Clegg, in his travels. He meets up with Mr Mipps and they have quite an adventure. There's plenty of ruthless slaughter and general mayhem. Syn finally settles in Dymchurch and Romney Marsh at the end of the book. A good read with plenty of melodrama and pirate action.
May Bird 2 - Among The Stars by Jodi Lynn Anderson continues May's adventures in dead people land. She's still on her quest to find the necessaries to get back to her home on Earth. There's danger on the way and such. I liked the series well enough to want to keep going but I doubt that I'll bother with keeping them. There's a third book that I have that I will read soon.
Wodehouse A Life by Robert McCrum is a pretty good bio on one of my favorite writers. There's a good bit of material on Wodehouse's life before and after the war but McCrum spends a good bit of the book on Wodehouse's capture by the Nazis and the broadcasts that got him into so much trouble. After the war he never returned to England, spending the rest of his life in a small town in New York state. If you're even slightly a Wodehouse fan this is a book well worth reading.
Lassie - Trouble At Panter's Lake by Steve Frazee is another Whitman TV novel. There's a whole bunch of these Lassie books from Whitman. You can read about the series here. Lassie is rescued from being trapped by some wire. She befriends the boys who help her and they befriend a couple of hippies. The bunch of them help save Panter's Lake from being turned into a housing development. The hippy subplot is pretty goofy and none to accurate.
Doctor Syn Returns by Russell Thorndike is the third book in the series and the second book in Dr Syn's story. He's settled into life as the Vicar of Dymchurch in Kent. To help pass the time he organizes the local smugglers into a huge, efficient and prosperous gang. Hardly anyone knows that under the mask of the Scarecrow he's the beloved Dr Syn. Not quite the rousing adventure that the Dr had as Clegg the Pirate but it was entertaining none the less.
The Further Adventures Of Doctor Syn by Russell Thorndike has more of the day to day smuggling on the English coast by Romney Marsh. This is the novel that William Buchanan based his novel Christopher Syn upon. Disney adapted the Buchanan novel for their film The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh TV series. That series was edited together into a movie that played in UK and Europe. The movie and series were released on DVD in the Walt Disney Treasures series and they sold out right away. I missed it, there were none on Amazon 10 days after it came out. There's a copy on offer now that's nearly 400 smackers. Someone was nice enough to download a torrent for me. You can buy bootlegs online. Go for the full two disc set, over the single movie or TV disc.
The Shore Road Mystery by Franklin W Dixon has the Hardy boys working on a case involving plenty of stolen cars. This is the 6th book in the series. I'm nearly done with collecting the first 38 books in their original format. As usual a fun read.
The Case Of The Worried Waitress by Erle Stanley Gardner is the 77th book in the Perry Mason series. It's is about a waitress accused of stealing $100 out of her aunt's hatbox. Perry helps her out. Perry likes helping out the pretty young ladies. It keeps him on his toes, since he gets into trouble so often.
The Case Of The Sun Bather's Diary by Erle Stanley Gardner is the 47th book and this time we have Perry helping a lady who had problems after a midnight ramble in her birthday suit. When she got back to her trailer everything was gone. Perry helps her get dressed again. He's like that, always willing to help. I've decided recently to collect all 80 Perry Mason novels. I have close to half now but I've not been trying very hard.
