Spy is Paul Feig's third movie with Melissa McCarthy, the first was Bridesmaids in 2011, that was followed by The Heat in 2013. I haven't seen either of the movies yet. I'm only somewhat a Melissa McCarthy fan, I'm more a Feig fan. I saw him first as an actor, then he started directing in 1997. I remember him fondly from his 1990 appearance on It's Garry Shandling's Show playing Garry's new wife's brother. He played one of the writers on The Jackie Thomas Show. That was a funny show that never made it to DVD. In 1999 he created Freaks And Geeks, he also wrote 6 of the episodes. He wrote the screenplay to the recent Ghostbusters reboot.
Melissa plays a spy handler, she sits behind the desk and feeds Intel to the spy in the field. Jude Law plays the spy she handles. She's fallen in love with him but he's not interested. When he's killed she goes into the field to observe and report. She's not supposed to get any deeper. Of course she does. Luckily for Melissa, she was trained to be a spy but she went nuts on the test course and wound up behind a desk.
Besides Melissa and Jude, the cast has Jason Statham, Miranda Hart, Jessica Chaffin, Katie Dippold, Rose Byrne, Peter Serafinowicz, 50 Cent and Allison Janney. They have a great script, so it's a pleasure to watch these cats work. Keep an eye out for the writer director as a drunken guy in Paris. I missed him myself.
There's plenty of spy activity and globe trotting. The film was filmed in Budapest which filled in for Washington, London, Paris and everywhere in between. There's plenty of action and jokes. Lots of jokes. There was lots of laughing. We all like a good joke. I'll have to keep an eye out for a copy, I'd want to watch this again.
Sperhauk picked up a Blu-ray of Zombie Diaries 2 for a couple of bucks and he's sorry he did. If you see this movie don't buy it. It's a found footage slog through that is boring at best and coma inducing at worst. I'm kidding, probably no one has fallen into a coma. I'd bet they would have had a stroke first. We had watched the first movie in the series and it was pretty poor too. Nice to know there's a couple movies I don't want to buy.
