Here's a nice 5 pack of Roy Rogers films that I picked up at the Bloomington Police Book Sale. It cost me 7 bucks and there are 5 movies, each introduced by Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and their son Roy "Rusty" Rogers Jr. Two of the DVDs there are guests, one the director of the picture and the other being their long time agent and friend. I enjoyed the reminisces and stories they all tell, often they're accompanied by bits of home movies, stills and the like. Each DVD has a copy of the same three extras: Roy Rogers And Dale Evans Biography, Sidekicks Feature, Roy Rogers Museum Tour. The bio piece isn't quite a half hour but it's fairly full of material. The sidekicks short was an entertaining look at actors like Smiley Burnett, Andy Devine, Pay Hingle and Gabby Hayes. The DVDs were sold separately as well as in the set.
Like a lot of kids in the 1950s & 1960s I was a big Roy Rogers Fan. We watched his TV show at our house, and when there were movies on, we watched them. During the 70s I moved onto other things and didn't watch Westerns much. I did the like the Italian Westerns like Clint Eastwood was doing. After VHS and DVD it became easier to see these older movies but I didn't watch them much until a few years ago when I went on a big Western glut after finding them to download and watch online. Of course the Multi Movie Packs have given me a few hundred oaters to watch when I get around to them.
Click to see what movies were featured. There's a lot of pictures so I hid the long post behind the link.
In Old Cheyenne 1941 Roy is a reporter who helps the locals rout out some train robbers. Gabby Hayes is the sidekick. It's a pretty good one with all the usual cowboy picture stuff going on. Here's a nice batch of lobby cards for the film.
Most of them can be increased in size by clicking on the image.
Young Bill Hickok 1940 Roy and Gabby get some help from Calamity Jane in fighting some crooks. About average unless judged as history, then it's a big ass failure. Still, I was entertained. Here's some more lobby cards for the film.
Again, click, big.
Under California Stars 1948 Some scumbag has stolen Trigger. Roy and pals get him back. Andy Devine is the sidekick in his picture. Here's more posters.
I like a lot of these old Western movie posters. More for nostalgia than because of the great art or anything. The really stunning images are often in the mystery, horror and science fiction genres.
Young Buffalo Bill 1940 Roy is Buffalo Bill in this historically wonked film. It's a typical plot, some crap hounds are trying to take over mining lands in New Mexico. Gabby is back in this one. It's about average. Here's more posters and lobby cards.
Again click on the images to embiggen.
Sunset In El Dorado 1945 Modern day Dale has a dream about her character's grandmother. She used to be the singer in a saloon. Roy is the romantic interest. A younger Gabby was Dale's grandmother's good friend, now 40 years later, him and the ghost town are all that's left of those exciting days.
Dale said in the intro to the film that they had planned for Dale to have a larger part because there was fear that Roy might get called up for service. They changed Roy's classification just before the film started shooting and he was no longer eligible for the draft.
That's it for this lot. That's a lot of pictures but I do like them and this way I have them to look at if I ever want to again. Things disappear off the internet more often than I like to see.
I watched lots of Roy Rogers. However I also watched Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson, Have Gun - Will Travel, Yancy Derringer, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin (does that count?), Cheyenne, Death Valley Days (*brought to you by 20 Mule Team Borax), Gunsmoke, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, The Rifleman, Sheriff of Cochise, Wagon Train, Wanted Dead or Alive and many others. I watched a lot of westerns. I Those mostly showed or stkarted in the 1950's. I continued watching the 1960's. I have some dvd collections also but haven't quite gotten around to watching them all. Some aren't quite as good as I remember them but still enjo8yable. Some on this web page IO don't recall ever watching or knowing about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_TV_Westerns
