The Boy In The Dress is the third of the BBC adaptations of David Walliam's books. I'm a big fan of David's books, they're fun and worth reading. The book was David's first novel and it came out in 2008, the BBC program came out in 2014.
David's books are illustrated by Quentin Blake and the TV show uses similar art for it's. I've come to like Quentin's work. He is well known for illustrating Roald Dahl's books and he's 84.
Billy Kennedy plays Dennis, he lives in a house with his father and older brother. His mom was a bit of a slag, she walked out on the family, they haven't heard from her in 5 years. His dad doesn't want to talk about her and he's destroyed all the family pictures with her on them.
Meera Syal plays the mom of Dennis's best pal Darvesh, the two of them are on the football team. Darvesh is a cool kid.
Harish Patel plays Raj, the newsagent that appears in several of David's book. It's at Raj's newsstand that Dennis picks up the copy of Vogue that leads him to Lisa James. She's the most popular girl in the school and she's the one who gets Dennis to dress up and go out on the town. Raj didn't recognize him, but he's using a French accent.
A trip to school in drag turns into disaster when Dennis is outed. All the kids laugh at him and on top of that he's kicked out of school by the headmaster, played by Tim McInnerny. This puts the football team in a tizzy, Dennis was their star player. Dennis's dad is totally upset by this.
On the day of the big day all the members of the team dress up in dresses and invite Dennis to join them. They win the match and everyone is all happy. Dennis is still not allowed back to school but with Raj's help Dennis and Lisa get the upper hand on the headmaster and Dennis is back in school.
Dennis and his family have a nice Christmas with Darvesh and his mom.
That's David Walliams as the football couch. The TV show is as good as the book. I liked the actors, the characters and everything about it. I was sure glad to have ordered the three program set from the UK, it was only about 16 bucks delivered.
