The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes is the 2nd of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes pictures. It came out September 1 1939, only 6 months after The Hound Of The Baskervilles. This time Basil Rathbone gets top billing. The movie is sort of based on a play by William Gillette but the Wikipedia says there isn't much of the play on the screen. The screenplay is by Edwin Blum and William Drake. Alfred L Werker is the director.
As usual Basil is joined by Nigel Bruce as Dr Watson. There's few in the cast that I know, Ida Lupino, Alan Marshal and George Zucco as Professor Moriarty.
The story starts with Holmes failure to get to court on time with the evidence to convict Professor Moriarty of a murder. The Professor goes free and he even offers Holmes a ride home in his carriage.
Ida comes to Holmes with a message that been set up by Moriarty. The Professor's plan is to put Holmes on a case while he carries on with his other plan to steal the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London. Ida's brother had been threatened by the message in the same way as Ida's father had been 10 years before. Holmes arrives at the brother's flat only to find him already dead.
Holmes spends the rest of the movie following his leads and solving the puzzle. You can find out how he does by watching the movie in the link above. It's a pretty good story and there's plenty of running about and sleuthing. George plays a darn good Moriarty. There's a commentary on this movie by the guy who edited Scarlett Street Magazine, Richard Valley.
