The first two I watched earlier today and the second two I watched earlier in the week. I've been picking SF movies from the list at Netflix DVD and they usually come Wednesday and Saturday. There's a plethora of them, that I haven't seen yet, but they aren't all very good. Some day I'll find that rare gem of a film and enjoy the shit out of it. It's the same thing in the horror genre, that rare gem, is indeed rare there too.
The Aurora Encounter 1986 The director, Jim McCullough, was the driver in the 1968 Disney movie The Love Bug. He directed 5 movies, all of which he produced, but they aren't titles I was familiar with. Jim's son, Jim McCullough Jr, wrote the script. The only names in the cast that I knew were Jack Elam, County singer Dottie West, and George "Spanky" McFarland.
It's a Western with an alien invasion that's based on an 1897 newspaper report. Not too many movies of the cowboys and aliens type out there. The alien is an actor with progeria, he plays a benign alien who has some encounters with the town, everyone mostly gets along with him. Until the governor sends a trigger happy Texas Ranger. This wouldn't have happened if they would have sent The Lone Ranger. He wouldn't be such a prick. Oh, well, it's kind of dumbly innocent. It was watchable but wouldn't need to watch it again.
Ultramarines - A Warhammer 40,000 Movie 2010 A 77 minute low budget animation about a battle on a planet. The Ultramarines are supposed to be the elite fighting team in the military but they sure take a beating. Only about 20% of them survived the planet fall. Well, two of 10 or 11. I wasn't sure of the number and I wasn't going back to look. There isn't much too it and it wasn't overly entertaining. Not something I'd need to see.
400 Days 2015 A bunch of astronauts are packed into a simulated spaceship for 400 days. Some time passes before a weird guy breaks into the simulator. The crew go outside and find that something has hit the moon and things are odd. Then the tests over and I was confused about what just happened. I didn't care much for it and wished I hadn't watched it.
The Signal 2014 Three college students are traveling across country. They encounter something and disappear. One of the guys, Nic, wakes up in a strange facility with alien robot legs. Laurence Fishburne comes to talk to him. The woman in the trio, Haley, is in a coma near by but the other man, Jonah, was never picked up. Nic freaks when he finds out his legs have been replaced with alien robot tech. Haley wakes up and Nic takes her out of the place. It's the desert. Oh, wait, it's a simulated place and they are on a spaceship. Then the movie ends. Someone's seen Dark City and didn't have their own interesting story to tell. It's barely average in story but the effects are a bit better. I wouldn't want to see it again.
