Hotel Artemis is a 2018 SF film that's set 10 years into the future. It's a pretty shitty future and when the movie starts the people of Los Angeles are rioting because a corporation has cut off their water. They deserve what they get, what with letting scumbags privatize the water supply. Let this be a lesson well learned. The riots are the backdrop to the story about a secret hospital for criminals run by Jodie Foster and Dave Batista. The night we are introduced to the Hotel is the night everything goes to shit. Too many people broke the rules and things went south real fast. Well, really, what did you expect when dealing with criminals. Cake?
Much of the movie seems to be about people making the wrong decisions and fuckin' things up. Then it's mired with a melancholy back story for Nurse who's stupid son was killed because he stole a car from Jeff Goldblum. Jeff's The Wolf King and Zachary Quinto is his incredibly stupid son. These guys are the worst of the scumbags. Sofia Boutella, some might remember her as the creepy murdering sidekick to Sam Jackson in Kingsman: The Secret Service, is a killer who's out to kill Jeff. She shoots herself to get into the Hotel.
The movie wonders about showing off the med tech of the future and building a bit of backstory for the characters. I thought it spent too much time on Nurse's backstory though it's what put her into the Hotel. She's in partnership with Jeff, he set it up, she runs it, with her rules. The place has been there 20 years and Jodie hasn't left it since she went through the front doors 20 years ago. When it was all said and done I could see myself not buying a copy.
I can say the same about [REC] 3, a 2012 Spanish zombie film. Zombies ruin a wedding and everyone dies. Not a story that I cared that much for, thus the lack of interest in buying a copy. I missed out on REC 1 and 2 but won't be looking for them in the future. There was an American version called Quarantine that I saw but didn't care for that much either.
