Appointment In London is a 1953 British film that was released in the US under the title Raiders In The Sky. Original story by John Wooldridge, he co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Westerby, the director is Philip Leacock. Wooldridge was a bomber pilot in WW2, flying 108 missions over Europe, he also wrote the film's score and conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Dirk Bogarde is a Lancaster pilot who's grounded from flying before he can have his 90th, and last, mission. There's plenty of base life before we get Dirk back in the air. He loses some friends and meets the wife of one of the missing men. Of course he does get a chance when a man is injured and they need another crew member on the Lancaster. It's a nasty run but he gets back OK. At the end of the movie Dirk and some other flyers travel to London receive an award from the King. He the black cab ride through the city Dirk remembers those who couldn't keep their appointment in London.
I've picked up a few Dirk Bogarde movies in the last year. He's not a guy who I've ever followed the career of but I usually enjoy him when I see him. He's in a lot of films I wouldn't bother to watch, dramas, that sort of thing. This was alright, it had an interesting enough story and some action. Good script, good cast, and a good reminder that lots of people don't come back from a war. I might watch it again. I have a DVD so I could.
