Walk The Dark Street 1956 Written and directed by Wyott Ordung.
Dan Ross returns to LA from serving in Korea. Chuck Conners plays a guy who's brother died in the war. The brother's last letter says he was passed over for promotion by Dan. It also says if anything happens to him it's probably Dan's fault. At the start of the movie we see Dan throw himself down on the ground when he hears a car backfire. It triggers a PTSD like flashback, we see Dan in Korea, the troop is attacked, men scramble for cover. The brother jumps up, exposing himself, he blast the Koreans and is quickly cut down by machine gun fire. There was nothing that Dan could have done to stop the man being killed.
Dan meets Chuck at his home. Chuck offers Dan a chance to make $10,000 in a bet. Chuck's a big game hunter with a bad heart. He's going to die soon and he's always wanted to hunt a man. He's had a special film bullet made up for his rifle. It takes a picture of the person in the sights. If Dan wins he's got a chance to pay off some debts and start fresh. If he loses he's out a grand and only a bit worse off than he is now. He decides to take a chance.
Chuck gives each of them a rifle with a camera bullet. After Dan leaves Chuck takes the camera bullet out of the gun and puts in a real bullet. Chuck leaves some easy to spot clues and Dan chases after them. Their paths cross but neither has a good shot at the other. A woman gets involved and Chuck nearly kills her. His heart is giving him problems and it will be the deciding factor in the contest.
There's a couple of twists and turns along the way and it all ends up in an ironic but though not so surprising way. It's short and brisk and entertaining. You can find it on YouTube or the Internet Archive. The latter has a better copy that I've linked in the title above. It's still not that great but watchable. It doesn't seem to be the sort of film that's going to get a nice restoration.
