So Dark The Night 1946 Story by Aubrey Wisberg, screenplay by Dwight V Babcock and Martin Berkeley, directed by Joseph H Lewis.
Steven Geray plays a Parisian police detective who takes a long due vacation in the countryside. The inn keeper's wife pushes her daughter to flirt with the older detective despite being engaged to a local farmer. The father is against it but they don't listen to him.
The daughter fawns over Steven and he has some hesitations, eventually he gives in and they get engaged. The night of their engagement party the daughter is found strangled. The locals suspect the fiance but he soon turns up dead. Steven tries to figure out who the killer is from a footprint and a few random clues.
He comes to an odd conclusion. You can find out what it was here. I enjoyed it but thought the ending was a bit weak and cliched.
