Adela Has Not Had Supper Yet 1977 Written by Jiří Brdečka and Oldřich Lipský, directed by Oldřich Lipský. A Czech comedy about popular fiction detective Nick Carter.
Nick Carter takes the case of a missing person and travels from New York to Prague. He meets with the police and a Commissar is assigned to him. The Commissar takes Nick on a tour of the local drinking and eating establishments that evening. Much sausage was consumed, much beer was drunk. The next morning Nick and his new pal are a bit under the weather as they visit the home of the missing person. Turns out it's a giant great Dane that's gone missing.
Nick and his pal confiscate a giant flesh eating plant from the house but it gets stolen. Nick suspects his old enemy The Gardner but he watched the man drown in a swamp many years ago. It turns out that The Gardner survived his swamp death and he's set up shop in Prague. He's one of those mad scientist types, he's breeding man eating planets to use in his misguided revenge plan. Nick and the Commissar put an end to his plans.
It's all rather silly but I thought it ran a bit long at 102 mins. It's a bit pokey in part. It looks pretty good and there are a few nice shots of local scenery in Prague. I enjoyed it but wasn't thinking about picking up a copy.
Rififi In Paris 1966 Based on the Auguste Le Breton novel The Upper Hand, screenplay by Denys de La Patellière with additional dialog from Alphonse Boudard, directed by Denys de La Patellière. A French film about a fight between some criminals. Rififi is French for fight.
Jean Gabin is a smuggler who owns a nightclub. The ladies at Jean's place manipulate guys into spending all their money on the girls until the marks are strapped for cash. The bartender knows where they can earn a pile of cash, strictly illegal of course. Claudio Brooks goes undercover to see if he can get a bust going. Gert Fröbe is a crooked antiques dealer and Jean's pal. Nadja Tiller is Gert's wife.
George Raft plays a gangster who moves on Jean. There's a bit of action and a few bodies. It's mostly entertaining but a bit slow at times. I enjoyed it which is good since I'd picked up the Kino Lorber Blu-ray at one of their sales. I'll be watching it again when I check out the commentary.
